The Guthrie Center, housed in the church made famous in Arlo Guthrie’s Alice’s Restaurant.

Great Barrington certainly provided us with some contrasts.

On the one hand, the quality of Norman Rockwell’s work, on display in the Norman Rockwell Museum, is superb. The works are delightful, well displayed, and plentiful.

But the feel of the place, the whole vibe, is that it’s museum, a good museum, and “we need your support”. it’s a wholly commercial venture, and the attitude of the staff there seem to make this point very clear.

By way of contrast, our visit to the Guthrie Center was so rewarding, spiritually, and mentally. We were immediately made to feel very, very welcome. We were treated as family, in a venture where the motivation is to be there for others, and to give.

What a contrast.
